Our story

What is Jugnuu?

Jugnuu means firefly in Urdu, a symbol of light in the darkness. But at Jugnuu, we're more than just a flicker. Through essential skills training, we help empower our underprivileged Pakistani youth to become beacons of change in a world where they haven’t been given the opportunity to shine.

Empowering Pakistan’s youth to light the way forward

The Challenge

30 million

children cannot read or write.

40 million

trapped in private and govt schools — present in form, absent in function.

Pakistan accounts for nearly a quarter of the world's 300 million out-of-school children.

That is not a statistic. It is a generational crisis.

National Emergency

A system built for obedience, not capability. Memorization, not curiosity. Degrees, not skills.

1%

Annual enrollment growth

At this rate — universal literacy by 2076. Over half a century away.

6m/yr

Population growth

The crisis deepens faster than the system can respond.

25A

Constitutional promise broken

Article 25A guarantees education for every child. The reality differs.

0.8%

GDP spent on education

UNESCO recommends 4%. Pakistan consistently falls short.

2.6%

Pakistan GDP growth

vs Vietnam's 8% — not a trade problem. A skills gap.

Why Jugnuu?

Degrees ≠ prosperity

Pakistan

8% university degree holders

GDP: $400 billion · Population: 250 million

More degrees. Smaller economy. The gap is a skills gap.

vs

Indonesia

3% university degree holders

GDP: $1.5 trillion · Population: 280 million

Bangladesh, 2024

14% unemployment — college grads

1.3% unemployment — no formal education

The solution to poverty is entry-level jobs.
— Phil Knight, Shoe Dog

Pakistan's own scholars — Adil Najam, Tariq Banuri, Ishrat Hussain — all champion skills development as Pakistan's human capital priority.

Belief

What any person in the world can learn, almost all can learn — if given the right conditions of learning.
— Adam Grant

The Reality

90%

of jobs are created by the private sector.

Schools teach for government jobs.

Jugnuu teaches for the world that actually exists.

— Ajay Banga, World Bank President

The Finnish Mantra

Invest in every student, regardless of apparent ability. Not just the gifted. Every brain. This is jugnuu's founding philosophy.

The Talent Is Already Here

Pakistan is one of the youngest countries on earth — home to 175 million Pakistani Gen Z, a generation already digital, ambitious, and ready.

  • Digitally fluent from birth

  • Globally connected & exposed

  • No longer chasing pakki naukri (the safe government job)

  • Moves between careers & ventures

  • Sees AI as the new frontier

They don't need to be rescued — they need to be equipped. That's the generation jugnuu is built for.
